Ruecas River Walkway

The attractions of the riverbanks are many and sometimes go unnoticed. The riverside forest is a changing space, the seasons mark in a radical way the image and the images that we will be able to contemplate. although the time of the year is also noticeable in the riverbeds, although there is always a minimum guaranteed by the upstream dams.
The Ruecas River is one of the main tributaries of the Guadiana River, it is about 90 km long. It starts in the villuercas peak, in the municipality of cañamero, and after passing through L holaogrosán reaches our town when the land ceases to be mountainous and the plains begin where the first irrigated lands are settled. there is currently a dam in cañamero and another in Logrosán, both of medium size. the press of achievementsán also has a blue that regulates the water of the irrigation canals.

However, if the rains are torrential and persistent, it is not difficult to suffer significant flooding. The most recent was in 2022, when the river overflowed and affected important areas causing great damage. roads and irrigation ditches had to be repaired. A situation that in the past was repeated very frequently, so life was adapted to the circumstances determined by the river. Thus, houses were built in places where floods would not reach. The good thing was that the water carried a large amount of mud and nutrients that enriched and soaked the soil… and the harvests would be more abundant, something similar to what happened in the Nile River in Egypt.
The course of the river has a great ecological and scenic value for Madrigalejo, complementing the upstream environments, a proposal for leisure, tourism and environment without equal.
In the past, fishing was abundant and of good quality. Its waters moved several flour mills, and also irrigated countless orchards along its banks. It was also a place of leisure and amusement because in many places large puddles were formed for bathing.
Ash and alder trees compete with other shrubs and plants growing near or around the water. The vegetation is quite abundant at times, which is used by a good number of reptiles, amphibians and birds of different sizes that prowl the area in search of shelter or food.
Also very interesting are the small farms, gardens that give life to natural products that are normally consumed at home. it is very easy to find some animals, from domestic livestock farms, in small family farms. These places are usually very popular with the locals, so it will be easy to meet and exchange information, sensations and experiences.
There is a simple circuit that runs along the river on both banks, it is short, just over two kilometers and takes half an hour plus what we stop. At the same time, very profuse in all kinds of incentives of very diverse nature. In addition to the natural and environmental resources, there are some leisure facilities: playgrounds, wooded areas and some artistic and historical details of interest. From the Casa de Santa Maria, we can access the promenade and turn around clockwise, passing over the road bridge to the other side and returning by the pontoon.
